Business Information Systems Course Outline

Welcome to your technology course with Mr. Estes. Students will be participating in a wide variety of practical activities that promote an in-depth understanding of technology based skills that will help middle school students throughout their lives.

Mission:

Our mission is to facilitate student learning in the area of information systems and technology so that they are well prepared for the twenty-first century. This will be accomplished by using a student-centered approach while teaching effective computer usage, and the infrastructure components of information technology that include; operating systems, application software, image editing, video editing and applications development.

Goals:

  1. Identify and utilize information and computer system components and peripherals.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of basic system software and business application software.
  3. Identify and apply the steps involved in analyzing digital photography and image editing.
  4. Demonstrate ability to use networks, worldwide web, & other technology tools in a variety of settings.
  5. Acquire excellent keyboarding skills and habits using proper home-row techniques.
  6. Students will exhibit personal and social behavior that respects self and others in online cyber-settings.
  7. Create and/or modify files appropriately through the use of office productivity tools: word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation.

Class Rules:

Students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that will help promote a safe and fun learning environment. A quality learning environment is achieved by following our five rules:

  1. Be respectful. This extends to respecting the equipment, fellow students, themselves, as well as the teacher.
  2. Be safe. This includes physical, emotional, and social safety. Emotional safety refers to providing an environment free from insults and bullying. Social safety refers to including and making others feel welcome.
  3. Be prompt. Be on time, logging into your computer upon entering and follow instructions quickly.
  4. Be involved. Participate appropriately at all times.
  5. Be prepared. Come ready for current activity, completing any missing work before class.

 

Class Consequences:

  1. Warning.
  2. In-class consequence: move to another computer, be removed from class or receive additional work.
  3. Lunch detention with possible phone call to parent.
  4. Parent, teacher and student conference.
  5. Referral to the principal.

Required Equipment:

Bring a pencil or pen. All other equipment and application access is provided at the school; however, working outside designated class time will often require computer, internet access and specific software applications.

Grading:

Students will receive daily points for completing the daily keyboarding assignment and subsequent keyboarding assessments. (Keyboarding time should be silent with 100% focus on the keyboarding assignment.) During class, students will also have opportunities to earn points by participating and treating equipment and other students correctly. In addition, there will be various other assignment and wide-ranging projects incorporating knowledge previously learned.

Assessment methods:

The assessment of course learning goals is based on daily in-class work, written tests, lab assignments, performance-based tasks as appropriate and comprehensive presentation projects.

 Grade Scale:

A          100-90%

B          89-80%

C          79-70%

D          69-60%

F           59-0%

Absences:

When students are absent they ought to automatically check Canvas for any missed assignments. The daily keyboarding requirement (of 10 minutes per day) must be completed for credit; missed time should be made-up outside of class during the week of the absence.

All students have enrichment time between lunch and 5th period every day and can receive extra help or catch-up on any schoolwork. Furthermore, all students can get tutoring in the library before school at 8:00 AM. I am also available before and after school to assist students.
